We spent the weekend in Yzerfontein, and I thought we’d give some of the newer, lesser discovered restaurants a chance so I booked a table at That Greek Place.
It’s rustic, very rustic, situated in a nursery and right next to a Gin tasting place, so set your expectations accordingly. It’s not fine dining, and it’s one step below restaurant dining too. It’s like you’re having dinner in a proper Greek family’s home. Presentation and plating is below average, and star-rating wise I would score this place a 2.5 out of 5.
That being said, it was a lovely night out with good wholesome home-cooking style food. It’s not amazing, it’s not so good you need to leave home and travel hundreds of miles to experience it. I reckon it’s better as a daytime venue because of the rough & ready decor and the setting within a very unrefined nursery with a wayward tortoise.
Food was as expected on a Greek menu – mezze with dips, skinny lamb chops, moussaka, haloumi, Greek salad, baklava. The pita bread was the only disappointment for me. It’s home made, and was flat and hard, more like a Melba toast than a fresh, fluffy pita bread. A lot of the dishes lacked seasoning. We had to add salt or tzatziki or lemon juice or all three.
However, the service and homely family hospitality outweighed all their shortcomings.
