Momo & O (Norwood, Jo’burg)

I absolutely love this Korean gem on Grant Avenue in Norwood. We’ve eaten there dozens of times and we’ve always had an exceptional meal.

They offer some lovely Tapas as starters, and I always get FOMO and order too much. Tonight there were 4 of us so we ordered 4 of the Tapas – prawn spring rolls, Firecracker Chicken, Edimame Beans, and my favorite and the reason I go there – the Korean Fried Chicken Wings. Everything is heavenly. I would have added the salt and pepper calamari too but that would have pushed an already generous selection of starters over the edge.

They also make their own ginger beer which is really good. I don’t usually have fizzy drinks but we’d left our wine at home and they’re not licensed, so I tried one of these. Not a substitute for a good Chardonnay but good enough.

They do Poké bowls, “Momo” bowls, Bao buns and Ramen bowls. I ordered the Duck Bao – delicious! Looked small on the plate but after the starters and two of those I was stuffed. Not too stuffed for dessert though. Somehow there’s always room. Annie had a Poké bowl. I sneaked a bite – absolutely yummy. The salmon was topped with a sweet teriyaki sauce and the rice was perfect.

For dessert I tried the Lemon Yuzu tart which came with a berry sorbet, and Brandon ordered the deep fried bun – a kind of mini doughnut without the hole, which came with a salted caramel dipping sauce. Like I said, although we were all full, we still found room to polish off both delicious desserts.

Momo & O is definitely worth discovering if you’ve never tried it, and those who live in the area love it. It’s authentic Korean fare in a welcoming and modern setting. Norwood isn’t as charming as it was years ago, but places like Momo & O are starting to lift the profile of the area and breath some new life back into the place. They’re not licensed and they charge zero corkage.

If the guys at Momo & O are listening we need one of these in Table View.
